Questions before you start

Straight answers about jobs, requirements, applications, rosters and working on site.

Getting started

FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) work refers to remote employment where workers fly from their home location to a mine site or remote project.

They stay in camp accommodation and work on a roster, such as 2 weeks on / 1 week off. It's common in the mining, oil, and gas sectors across Western Australia and Queensland.

Start with entry-level roles like Utility Allrounder, Mine Site Cleaner, or Laundry Attendant. Build an ATS-friendly FIFO resume that highlights PPE use, safety awareness (Take 5, SDS) and your interest in the FIFO lifestyle, then apply through companies like Programmed, Ventia, Sodexo and Compass Group.

Some roles accept candidates with no FIFO experience if they show adaptability, a strong work ethic and willingness to work under pressure.

Pay & rosters

FIFO workers can earn between $80,000 and $150,000 AUD per year, depending on their role. Positions like FIFO chefs, utility workers and trade assistants sit on different pay scales — salaries run higher across the board due to remote conditions and long shifts.

Your roster sets how long you're on site and how long you're off. The most common is 2/1 — 2 weeks on, 1 week off. Another popular option is 14/7. Depending on the site and your role, you might also see:

  • 8/6 or 7/7 — shorter shifts, often in goldfields or oil & gas projects
  • 3/1 or 4/1 — intensive rosters for shutdowns or high-demand projects
  • 2/2 or 14/14 — balanced options with equal time off

Most FIFO rosters run 12-hour shifts, rotating between day and night, with flights and accommodation provided.

Life on site

FIFO camps offer single-room accommodation, shared dining halls, gyms, laundry and recreation areas. Most have Wi-Fi, air conditioning and quality meals.

Life at camp is structured — long work hours followed by rest time, with limited travel options during your swing.
